Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Not illustrated. 1855 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER L GEORGE JACOB HOLYOAKE. c I could not live--coulds't thou? to hear a truth Cry loudly in the heart, and strangle it. Were this the end, no other life beyond, Better to perish thus, our dust unurned (So it might nourish still a living flower). Rather than breathe such breath as hourly kills The truth that blooms within.' Vinia. Perpctua, by Sakab Flow** Adams. A Few years ago, it was remarked by an acute spectator* of a Discussion on Christianity, that "those who stand at the head of society, and argue that the minds of the people must be left alone, or they will break loose from the religious ties that are supposed to bind them, and drift away no one knows whither--must take a new course, as the people are already free from those ties; and they who mean to guide them must guide them speedily, or some one else will do so for them."! The truth of this remark becomes increasingly apparent with every year. Not only are the details of Christianity, or the Church, fearlessly called in question, but even the corner-stone of Theology, the existence of the Deity, is freely canvassed. Painful as it is to earnest worshippers to hear such a topic debated on a platform, before a mixed audience, such is the irresistible destiny of to-day. The popular theology fails to rule the minds of large numbers of thoughtful men among the working classes, and they come forward and challenge their spiritual masters to defend or to disown it. Possessing sufficient culture to be critical, but not enough to compete with the clergy on the literary points which are inextricably bound up with the subject, they are more quick to detect error, than strong to evolve truth. This is soon discerned by the other side, who forthwith descant on the presumption of " the...

Not illustrated. 1876 Excerpt: ...they can hold ' spirited dialogue" and_ " sustained conversation with Heaven's King,"--and when the published specimens of that conversation are sometimes so irreverent and puerile, sometimes so vindictive and narrow, as to bear the most unquestionable witness against their supposed heavenly nature;--when we see all this, we cannot but sorrowfully recognize that deification of blind impulse, unchecked by any opposing force, either in the mind of the individual himself or in the action of those around him, which has proved the ruin of so many religious reformers. In short, the division of last year has enabled the two incompatible parties in the Bengal section of the Brahmo Somaj to dcvolopc freely, each according to its nature. The one has advanced towards Autocracy, the other towards a Commonwealth. That Commonwealth is founded on tEe normal principles of Progressive Brahmoism, and cherishes all its noble traditions. Its members are not brilliant writers, nor sensational lecturers; they have as yet taken no conspicuous place in the eyes of the European public, which often doubts whether the Brahmo Somaj has not altogether collapsed. But they are steadily going on with their work, independently of praise, nobly living or faithfully dying, sowing the seeds which shall surely spring up for the future welfare of India. Let us take leave of these brave workers, whose energy and devotedness have thus really saved their Church, with the inspiriting words in which Matthew Arnold salutes the true " helpers and friends of mankind" in periods of modem revival:--"Ye move through the ranks, recall The stragglers, refresh the outworn, Praise, re-inspire the brave! Order, courage, return; Eyes rekindling, and prayers, Follow your steps as ye...

Sophia Dobson Collet was born Sophia Dobson in the parish of Saint Pancras, London, the fifth of seven children of John Dobson (1778–1827), and his wife (and first cousin), Elizabeth Barker (1787–1875).
She was described by Richard Garnett in the biography of William Johnson Fox as having attacks of a "disabling illness". Her elder brother was the chartist radical Collet Dobson Collet (1812–1898). She was the aunt of civil servant Clara Collet (1860–1948).
Collet was a supporter of the (now Conway Hall Ethical Society) and wrote several hymns for the organisation. Her brother Charles was its musical director
lieutenant is at South Place that she came into contact with George Holyoake. She would contribute to both The Reasoner and The Movement from the 1840s to 1850s as well as have continued correspondence with Holyoake long after.
She is also credited with preserving many of Fox"s writings. The book was an expanded version of what she had written as Panthea in the Free Inquirer.
lieutenant echoed the same conciliatory tone between religion and non-religion that Holyoake had long espoused.
Collet remained a Unitarian even as South Place moved into to a non-religious direction. She joined the Moral Reform Union, wrote articles on women"s education and supported William Thomas Stead during his imprisonment in 1885. Stead would occasionally attend lectures at South Place.
Her efforts to help Josephine Butler repeal the Contagious Diseases Acts in India put a strain on her relationship with Richard Holt Hutton of The Spectator.
Her name appears on the petition for female suffrage published by The Fortnightly Review. Collet met Ralph Waldo Emerson and had a lifelong interest in transcendentalism.
