Sophie Arnold was born in 1961. Her education and legal career were centred in Amsterdam, the Netherlands' largest city and a long-standing centre of academic and commercial life.
Arnold studied at the University of Amsterdam, with her studies there dated to 1985. The university traces its origins to the Athenaeum Illustre, which the city of Amsterdam founded in 1632 to educate its citizens.
The Athenaeum was recognised as an institution of higher education in 1815 and became the Municipal University of Amsterdam in 1877, when it gained the right to confer doctoral degrees. In 1961 the national government made it a national university under its current name.
Arnold was admitted to the Amsterdam bar in 1987, marking the start of her professional legal qualification in the city.
Arnold was admitted to the Amsterdam bar in 1987 and worked as a partner of Stibbe, Blaisse & De Jong. The Amsterdam office of the firm traces its origins to 1911, when Stibbe started a law practice in Amsterdam.
In 1991 Stibbe, Blaisse & De Jong in Amsterdam merged with Simont & Simont in Brussels to form Stibbe & Simont, which later became known simply as Stibbe. The firm's later development as a Benelux full-service practice followed from this combination of Dutch and Belgian offices.
