Sorin Dumitrescu was born on March 18, 1946, in Bucharest, Romania.
Sorin Dumitrescu studied at the Bucharest National University of Arts under the Romanian painter and illustrator Corneliu Baba. Among his classmates were such artist as Mihai Cismaru, Ştefan Câlţia and Sorin Ilfoveanu. The artist graduated in 1969.
Sorin Dumitrescu was also a disciple of Father Constantin Galeriu, a priest, who influenced his art style.
Sorin Dumitrescu started his career in 1969 when he held his first solo show in Bucharest and since then became an active participant of annual and biennial exhibitions in Bucharest. Two years later he debuted abroad at the San Marino International Arts Festival. The debut was followed by the exhibitions in Toulon (1974), Stockholm (1975), Paris (1975), Osaka (1981) and Paris Youth Biennale (1982).
Among other books, Dumitrescu illustrated two poetry collections by one of the most influential Romanian poets of the second half of the 20th century Nichita Stănescu. There were Opere imperfect (Imperfect Works, 1979) and Noduri şi semen (Knots and Signs, 1982).
The artist took an active part in the artistic life of Romania. So, in 1981, he entered the number of the members of 9 + 1 Artistic Group.
Dumitrescu is a curator of the Catacomba Gallery in Bucharest.
