During the Seinan-no-eki (1877) Soroku Kawakami was promoted major and proved himself to be a master strategist. Later he was sent as an aide to War Minister Iwao Oyama to Europe. During the Sino-Japanese War Soroku Kawakami rendered meritorious services as a staff member of GHQ. He was a member of the reception committee that was formed to receive Prince Nicholas, the Russian Crown Prince, when he came to Japan(1891). Was eventually created viscount, promoted to rank of general and made Chief of General Staff (1898).
