Sosuke Okaya engaged at first in his family business of dealing in hardware. Founded the Shippo Company (1871) and exported shippo-yaki (cloisonne ware). Improved on the traditional Japanese cloisonne ware and made it well known abroad. Also engaged in cotton spinning, timepiece, match and porcelain manufacturing. Became a leading businessman in Nagoya, holding executive posts in the Okaya Company, Limited, the Aichi Bank and other firms.
