Sotan Kamiya was born in Saga Perfecture.

Career

Sotan Kamiya was a prosperous merchant he was a close friend of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Rikyu Sen. He gave up worldly affairs and became a priest at the Daitokuji Temple, Kyoto (1586). Later he helped Ieyasu Tokugawa to raise funds for the building of a castle at Fukuoka. Sotan Kamiya was also a master of tea ceremony and he is credited with being the originator of Hakataori, a special variety of woolen fabric that takes its name from the region of Hakata.
