Sozaburo was born in 1830 in Japan. He was the second son of Nagahiro Sano, a Kyoto lacquer ware artisan.

Sozaburo was adopted as son by Hozen Eiraku, a potter, and called himself Kaizen Eiraku. He and his foster father, Hozen, made Eiraku-yaki pottery (from 1852). He moved to Osaka (1875) and made Eirakuyaki ware with pictures.
Married Ume, a daughter of Ryoyii Takebe, a paper hanger (1851) and inherited from his father-in-law the former kiln-site of Ninsei at Omuro, west of Kyoto.
