BANCROFT, Squire Bancroft was born on May 14, 1841 in London.
Studied at private schools, England and France. First appeared on the stage at Birmingham in 1861.
Acted afterwards at leading provincial theatres with all the prominent “ stars ” of the stage: twenty years manager old Prince of Wales’s and Haymarket Theatres, during which modern revival of stage was started. Retired from management, r1885. Acted afterwards with Irving, but rarely since.
Was knighted by Queen Victoria for notable services to his profession.
Has devoted much time to “Readings” for Hospitals throughout the country, and by which he has raised large sums. Knight Bachelor; cartulary-register 1897.
