She is a Christian virgin martyr, who has been highly venerated from an early date. She was put to death at Catania in Sicily, probably in the persecution of Decius, a.d. 249-251. The "Acts" of her martyrdom, recorded not earlier than the 16th century, are legendary. St. Agatha is invoked against fire and lightning. Her feast is February 5.
