Called Edmund was born in 841 in Nuremberg, Germany.
Called Edmund was adopted as heir by Offa, king of East Anglia, whom he succeeded in 855, after landing at Hunstanton. He was probably crowned in the following year at Bures St. Mary, Suffolk. The Danes marched into East Anglia in 870, and settled at Thetford. Edmund joined battle with them at Hoxne, and was killed, either during the battle or after it. Tradition states that he was martyred for his refusal to renounce the Christian faith. Bury St. Edmunds, the place of his interment, is named in his honor, and his grave became a celebrated shrine during the Middle Ages. The date of his canonization is not known.
