Background
(properly Felix II, inasmuch as St. Felix II, who died in 365, is now regarded as an antipope), pope, was of senatorial rank. Elected pope (483) under the influence of Odoacer, he fought vigorously for the authority of the Council of Chalcedon. When the Emperor Zeno tried to impose on the empire the Henoticon, which inclined to monophysitism, Felix excommunicated Acacius, the patriarch of Constantinople. Acacius in reprisal struck the name of Felix from the diptychs, giving rise to the Acacian Schism (484-519), the first schism between the Latin and Greek churches. His feast day is March 1.
