Actor editor producer publisher writer
Stan Lee was born as Stanley Martin Lieber on December 28, 1922, in Manhattan, New York, United States. He was a son of Celia (née Solomon) and Jack Lieber. Lee had a younger brother named Larry Lieber.
Stan Lee attended the DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx and side by side worked small jobs like writing obituaries for a news service and press releases for the National Tuberculosis Center, and working as an office boy for a trouser manufacturer. At fifteen, Lee entered a high school essay competition called "The Biggest News of the Week Contest." Lee claimed to have won the prize for three straight weeks and the New York Herald Tribune suggested he look into writing professionally. Later he said that that episode changed his life.
Stan Lee started his career as an assistant in 1939 at the new Timely Comics division of pulp magazine and comic-book publisher Martin Goodman's company. He started out by doing menial jobs but soon made his comic-book debut with the text filler Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge in Captain America Comics #3, using the pseudonym Stan Lee that eventually became his legal name. In 1941, Lee started getting opportunities to do actual comics with a backup feature. He created the Destroyer in Mystic Comics No. 6, Jack Frost in USA Comic No. 1 and Father Time in Captain America Comics No. 6. When he was only 19 years old he was made interim editor of the company. Lee remained as the comic-book division's editor-in-chief, as well as art director until 1972.
In 1942, Stan Lee joined the United States Army and served stateside in the Signal Corps. He continued his creative streak there by writing manuals, training films and slogans, which is why he was classified in the military as a playwright. After military service Lee joined back the company in 1950s, which was now known as the Atlas Comics. He started experimenting with various genres. He produced a newspaper strip with his colleague Dan DeCarlo, titled My Friend Irma, which was essentially based on a radio comedy that starred Marie Wilson. In late 1950, in competition with DC Comics, Lee’s publisher, Goodman, asked him to create a new superhero team. In 1961 Lee and artist Jack Kirby created The Fantastic Four. The series made him and Atlas (now known as Marvel) major forces in the comics world. One year later Lee and artist Steve Ditko created Spider-Man.
Throughout 1960s, Stan Lee scripted, art-directed and edited most of Marvel's series while moderating the letters pages. He was also writing a monthly column, Stan’s Soapbox. To maintain his workload and meet deadlines Stan Lee used a system that became known as the "Marvel Method". The point of this method was that Lee would brainstorm a story with the artist and then prepare a brief synopsis rather than a full script. Based on the synopsis, the artist would fill the allotted number of pages by determining and drawing the panel-to-panel storytelling. After the artist turned in penciled pages, Lee would write the word balloons and captions, and then oversee the lettering and coloring. This method gave artists significantly more input on story plotting, and it allowed Marvel to produce new content at a dizzying rate.
In 1963, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created The X-Men. Marvel continued to prosper, and in 1972 Lee became publisher and editorial director of the group. He attended the comic book conventions around America, lectured at colleges and participated in panel discussions. In 1981, Lee moved to California to develop Marvel's TV and movie properties. He was an executive producer for, and made cameo appearances in Marvel film adaptations and other movies. Later he took up a post of president, but soon he left that post in order to become publisher instead. In 1999 he formed Stan Lee Media, an Internet entertainment company built around his creations. Eventually his role at Marvel became that of chairman emeritus. Lee’s new firm did well with its first project, an animated online series called 7th Portal. However, the company was beset by a number of lawsuits and corruption charges. It filed for bankruptcy in February 2001.
In 2001, Stan Lee formed POW! (Purveyors of Wonder) Entertainment with Gill Champion and Arthur Lieberman, in order to create film, television and video game properties. He also launched the Stan Lee's Sunday Comics. Lee got involved with the DC Comics and launched Just Imagine series for them, in which he re-created DC superheroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman. Live-action film success came with the first of the X-Men movies (2000) and the first of the Spider-Man series (2002), and superhero franchises continued with various studios. Lee was often featured in cameo roles in those films, a tradition that continued after Disney purchased Marvel in 2009.
In 2008, Lee wrote humorous captions for the political fumetti book Stan Lee Presents Election Daze: What Are They Really Saying? His entertainment company partnered with Guardian Media Entertainment in 2010 on The Guardian Project in creating superhero mascots for the National Hockey League. Lee announced his new YouTube channel, Stan Lee's World of Heroes, airing various programs created by him. In 2015, he wrote the book, Zodiac, along with Stuart Moore. At the 2016 Comic-Con International, Lee introduced his digital graphic novel Stan Lee's God Woke.
Stan Lee continued to create new characters until his death. Over the past few years his eyesight was failing and he lost the ability to read and write. However, even these problems did not prevent him from continuing his creative work. Stan was assisted here by his daughter, Joan Celia Lee. She spent her whole life asking her father to create a new superhero together, and that dream finally came true. Stan and Joan Celia were working on a character named Dirt Man. Stan Lee helped to develop the story of the character, and the last of his adjustments Lee voiced before his death. The details of the story of the new hero are kept secret for now.

2013Stan Lee was widely believed to be agnostic. In a 2002 interview, he stated when asked if he believed in God "No, I'm not going to try to be clever. I really don't know. I just don't know."
Stan Lee was a supporter of the Democrats. He started contributing money to the party’s candidates in 1994 when Edward Kennedy was running for the Senate. After the 2008 election, he said that being president these days is too big a job for someone with just one superpower and he thinks that Obama has a certain Mr. Fantastic quality.
Lee’s comics often promote a liberal worldview with their emphasis on social justice and equality. His early comics were also laden with anti-communist rhetoric, causing some to speculate that he either leaned to the right of the political spectrum, or he was apolitical enough to absorb anti-commie sentiment without much critical thinking.
Apart from his participation in the creation of the classic Marvel Comics characters, Stan Lee also helped weaken censorship in the mainstream comics field. For example, he made a story about the problem of drug abuse. The story he wrote in 1971 for "The Amazing Spider-Man" concerned Peter Parker's friend Harry Osborne having a bad trip on LSD and nearly dying from it. The Comics Code Authority was against it because the portrayal of drugs was against the code. Lee and Goodman decided to defy the CCA and published the story as is without the seal and received healthy sales and a positive public reaction for his efforts in portraying the social problem.
Stan Lee also supported programs and ideas that improve access to literacy resources, as well as promoting diversity, national literacy, culture and the arts.
Quotations:
"I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: Entertainment is one of the most important things in people's lives. Without it they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you're able to entertain people, you're doing a good thing."
"I always wrote for myself. I figured I'm not that different from other people. If there's a story I like a lot, there's got to be others with similar tastes."
"For years, kids have been asking me what's the greatest superpower. I always say luck. If you're lucky, everything works. I've been lucky."
"We live in a diverse society – in fact, a diverse world – and we must learn to live in peace and with respect for each other."
"I've been the luckiest man in the world because I've had friends, and to have the right friends is everything: people you can depend on, people who tell you the truth if you ask something."
"The experience of reading a printed comic book will never change, but now, thanks to the digital age, there are many different ways to enjoy the same story. Digital comic books, of course, can be interactive in many different ways, allowing the reader to feel like a participant in the story."
"America is made of different races and different religions, but we're all co-travelers on the spaceship Earth and must respect and help each other along the way."
Stan Lee was a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the National Cartoonists Society. He also was a founder and president of the Academy of Comic Book Arts.
Stan Lee’s trademark catchphrase was "Excelsior!" which means "Ever upward."
Quotes from others about the person
Dr. Malcolm Cook: "Stan Lee was responsible for bringing the personality to his original comic book characters like Spider-man and the Hulk and in recent years his presence as an elder statesman, most notably in his cameos in all the Marvel films, continued this, giving them a stamp of approval and a link with the past."
Stan Lee married Joan Clayton Boocock on December 5, 1947. The marriage produced two daughters, but his second daughter Jan Lee, died a few days after her birth in 1953. Joan died on July 6, 2017.
