Blunt, Stanhope English was born on September 29, 1850 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Charles E. and Penelope Bethune (English) Blunt.


Graduate Oswego (New York) High School, 1868, United States Military Academy, 1872.


November 18, 1873; children—Katharine, Evelyn B., Frances S. Appointed Second lieutenant 13th Infantry, June 14, 1872. Promoted through grades to colonel, June 25, 1906. Retired from active service at own request, September 1, 1912.

Recalled to active duty, April 7, 1917. In Ordnance Office, Washington, District of Columbia, till August 4, 1918. Servide in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado with 13th Infantry, 1872-1874.

Lieutenant colonel and colonel aide-de-camp to General P. H. Sheridan, 1885-1888. Inspector small arms practice, 1885-1889. Instructor mathematics and in science of ordnance and gunnery, United States Military Academy, 1876-1880.

Commanding Rock Island (Illinois) Arsenal, 1897-1907, Springfield (Massachusetts) Armory, 1907-1912. Chairman Transportation Commission, Springfield, 1912-1915. President Park Commission, Springfield Planning Commission, Springfield Hospital, 1913-1917.
