(The demand for a presentation of metabolic reactions in t...)
The demand for a presentation of metabolic reactions in the form of charts may be evaluated from the fact that nearly 300,000 copies of 'Metabolic Pathways' (D.E. Nicholson 1969) have been distributed since the first edition appeared in 1960. As the demand for charts increased, so did the number of requests made to the author, from all parts of the world, to furnish references to publications relating to the various reactions formulated. In order to meet this demand it was decided to present, in book form, separate charts of pathways in which enzymes were named and references were cited. Our attention has not been confined to the sequences of 'Metabolic Pathways'; many other metabolic relationships are also summarized in these pages. This book has been written to satisfy needs that arise when intermediary metabolism is taught to students at all levels.
