Merjan was born on January 10, 1928 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Morris and Rose (Katz) Merjan.
Merjan earned his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from City College of New York in 1948.
Merjan began his career as a construction engineer in New York City's Water Supply System in 1948. Two years later he took the same position at Gull Contracting Company. In 1951, Stanley became a structural designer at General Dynamics Corporation, where he worked until 1953.
In 1955, he was appointed a construction superintendent at Underpinning & Foundation Skanska. Also, he held the position of general superintendent, chief engineer and executive vice president for operations at that company. Merjan was involved in a number of high profile building projects involving pile foundations including the new Yankee Stadium, JFK Airport Air Train, Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. In 1999 Stanley became a senior consultant at Underpinning & Foundation Skanska, where he worked until his passing away.
Merjan revolutionized Pile Driving in the New York area in the 1970s with his patented TPT (Tapered Pile Tip) system.
In 1992, he was named ORT’s New York City Engineer of the Year. Stanley was inducted into the Academy of Geo-Professionals as a Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering.
In 2001, Deep Foundations Institute honored Stanley by creating a scholarship in his name. He held 12 United States patents for high capacity driven piles.
Merjan was a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute, New York State Society of Professional Engineers and Deep Foundations Institute.
On June 5, 1954 Stanley Merjan married Florence Louise Malone. They have three children and grandchildren.
