Background

Stanley Tucci was born on November 11, 1960 in Peekskill, New York, United States; the son of Joan (Tropiano) Tucci, a secretary and writer, and Stanley Tucci, Sr., an art teacher at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua. Stanley is the oldest of three children in his family. He grew up in nearby Katonah, New York.

Education

Stanley attended John Jay High School. There he played on soccer and basketball teams, but interest in dramatic art, in the end, turned out to be stronger than his love for sports. Tucci with friends participated in almost all the productions of the school theater club, and this determined his choice of profession. In 1982, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from State University of New York at Purchase.

Career

In 1982, Tucci made his Broadway debut in The Queen and the Rebels. In 1985, he first got a small role in the movie - in the drama Prizzi's Honor. Throughout the 1990s, he mainly played secondary roles in little-known films, although he starred in hits, such as Beethoven. His notable works were the films The Pelican Brief (1993) and Kiss of Death (1994). Stanley played his first major roles in the romantic comedies A Modern Affair (1995) and A Family Affair (2001).

In 1996, Tucci made his own film - the culinary melodrama Big Night - and played one of the leading characters in it. He wrote the script for the film with his cousin Joseph Tropiano. Other relatives of Stanley also participated in the film: his sister Christina appeared in the movie and his mother compiled a recipe book for the film. The picture was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and brought Tucci and Tropiano a prize for the best screenplay. In 1998, Stanley released his second directorial work - the comedy The Impostors, in which he starred alongside Canadian actor Oliver Platt.

Stanley Tucci gained recognition in the second half of the 1990s thanks to television. His roles in the TV series Murder One, Winchell, and the television movie Conspiracy have been awarded numerous nominations and prizes. In the 2000s, the actor began to appear in major Hollywood projects: Lucky Number Slevin, The Terminal, The Devil Wears Prada, Maid in Manhattan, America's Sweethearts, Julie and Julia and Burlesque. Stanley did not forget about television. In 2006, he played in the comedy series Monk. In 2007, Tucci starred in several episodes of the cult series Emergency Room, and also released another directorial creation - a comedy melodrama with Patricia Clarkson, titled Blind Date.

In 2009, Stanley played the serial killer in the psychological drama The Lovely Bones. This role earned him nominations for all major acting awards.

In 2010, Tucci acted as a theater director, staging the play Lend Me a Tenor on Broadway. The same year, the comedy Easy A was released, in which Tucci played the father of the main character. The actor also took part in voicing the animated film Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back.

In 2011, the sought-after actor appeared in the Oscar-nominated thriller, Margin Call, with Paul Bettany and Kevin Spacey, and in an adaptation of the legendary Marvel comic book about the adventures of Captain America during the Second World War - Captain America: The First Avenger, where he played the role of a doctor Abraham Erskine. This role allowed him to realize his old dream - to speak with a German accent. In 2012, Tucci delighted fans with the reincarnation of Caesar Flickerman as a resident of the Capitol, in a fantastic action film about the deadly entertainment of the people of the future - The Hunger Games - and repeated his character in the sequels The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015).

Stanley also appeared in the films A Little Chaos (2014) and Wild Card (2014), and the series BoJack Horseman (2014-2015) and Fortitude (2015). The drama thriller directed by Tom McCarthy, released in 2015, brought Tucci an award. In 2017, Stanley played the Maestro Cadenza in Bill Condon's musical film based on the fairy-tale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont Beauty and the Beast. The film, which starred Emma Watson, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Dan Stevens and Emma Thompson, surpassed all the creators' expectations and became the tenth highest-grossing picture of all time.

At the same time, Stanley appeared in the role of Jack Warner in the series Feud with Jessica Lang and Susan Sarandon and was nominated for an Emmy Award. After starring in the movie Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), the actor once again performed in the film about the confrontation of the Decepticons and Autobots - Transformers: The Last Knight. Back in 2017, in addition to directing a biographical drama, Final Portrait, with Armie Hammer and Jeffrey Rush, which tells about the downhill of life of one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century - Alberto Giacometti, Stanley played in Patient Zero, The Сhildren Act, and others.

In 2020, Tucci began voicing the character Bitsy Brandenham in the Apple TV+ animated musical comedy series Central Park.

Stanley Tucci spoke out against Donald Trump while talking to press at the film festival. During the promotion of his new film Final Portrait, Trump's threats to cut the National Endowment for the Arts were discussed, and Tucci was asked if he thinks his film would change the president's mind. He said: "I don't think our film can influence the president in any way, shape, or form. There, government has always had an ambiguous relationship to the arts in the U.S. ... I can imagine if this administration has its way, they will eviscerate the arts. Art should be an intrinsic part of life, but many people don't see art as an important part of education. This administration may not even see education as important." It sounded like a jab at recently appointed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who is considered by many Democrats to be an enemy of the public school system. DeVos survived disastrous confirmation hearings, in which she failed to answer basic education questions, and claimed that guns might be needed in schools to fend off grizzly bears.

In 2016, Tucci, along with Cate Blanchett, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Peter Capaldi, Douglas Booth, Neil Gaiman, Keira Knightley, Juliet Stevenson, Kit Harington, and Jesse Eisenberg, appeared in a video from the United Nations' refugee agency UNHCR in order to help raise awareness to the global refugee crisis. In the video, the actors read a poem, written by Jenifer Toksvig and inspired by primary accounts of refugees. The couple reunited in 2005. Kate Tucci died of breast cancer on April 27, 2009.
