Prior to Credentica, Brands licensed earlier versions of the technology to DigiCash and Zero-Knowledge Systems. Brands has served as an adjunct professor at McGill University (2000–2010), serves on the advisory board of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (since 2007) and has served on the advisory boards of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (2005–2006) and the Internet service provider Institute of University of Toronto (2007–2011).
