1918 graduate Philology Faculty, Kiev University.
From 1918 taught and wrote theater reviews in Kiev. 1923-1942 taught courses on for lit at Leningrad University and Herzen Teachers’ Training Institute. Also lectured on for theater history at Leningrad Theatrical Institute and Higher Art History Courses, Institute of the History of the Arts.
1943-1952 professor, 1952-1957 head, Chair of Foreign Theater, State Institute of Theater and Art History. 1943-1948 also director of this institute Professor, Studio School, Moscow Academy Arts Theater and Academy of Social Sciences, Central Committee, Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Simultaneously head, Theater Theory and History Section, Institute of the History of the Arts, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Specialized in the history of Italian and French lit and art during the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightement and the history of West European theater as a whole. 1931 and 1933 translated T. Guardati’s “Novellino" and Goldoni’s “Memoirs” into Russian.
His work was noted for its profound erudition and clarity of exposition.
