In 1969 Stefan studied at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania. In four years he became a Bachelor of Arts in English. In October 1978 he was a student of the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania. In June 1984 he received a degree of the Doctor of Philosophy in Cluj, philology, letters.
Stefan Oltean was an instructor of English at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania from 1973 to 1990. In this year he became an assistant professor of English. In 1994 he became associate professor of English at Babes-Bolyai university, and in 1998 full professor of American and English linguistics at the same university.
From 1984 to 1986 Stefan Oltean was visiting professor at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, United States. In 1990 he became visiting professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, United States. He worked there until 1992. From 1996 to 2000 he was chairman of the Professorial Council of the Faculty of Letters at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
In 2000 Stefan became Dean of The Faculty of Letters, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He held this position until 2004. In this year he became a Vice-rector of Babes-Bolyai University, until 2006. In 2012 he became chairperson of the English Department at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Since 2013 Stefan has been President of the Commission for Humanities and Theology, the Romanian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (ARACIS) in Bucharest, Romania. In 2015 he was Director of the Doctoral school of linguistic and literary studies at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
