The book is intended as a monographic presentation of the criteria used to formulate the problems in structural optimization and of the methods applied in their solution. The quantity and range of investigations conducted within the last twenty years call for an attempt to sum up the actual state of knowledge in this domain and to outline its principal trends and achievements. This is the main aim of the book. Structural optimization is considered here as a part of the mechanics of civil engineering and building structures. ln the last few decades, however, close relations with the mathematical theory of optimization have opened new possibilities of formulating and solving important structural problems. The content of the book reflects both influences of civil engineering and of mathematics. The book is composed of three parts. ln the first part, basic concepts and main optimality criteria are described and illustrated by structural applications. The second part is concerned with the methods of structural optimization. Successive chapters are devoted to mathematical programming, and several methods of linear, non-linear, dynamic and stochastic programming are presented and explained in some detail. Next, classical and non-classical variational methods are discussed in view of their application in optimization. Experimental methods of optimization are covered in the last chapter of the second part. The third part contains a commented review of the literature on structural optimization as well as a chronological bibliography comprising over 2000 references of the most important articles, papers and books published all over the world. The book is addressed to structural engineers, students and lecturers at technical universities who are interested in the fundamental problems of structures.
