Stella Maeve is an American film and television actress. She is best known for her brilliant portrayal of the character of Julia Wicker in the TV series The Magicians. She made her screen debut in the 2005 short film Liminality. That year, she also appeared on the big screen for the first time, in the critically acclaimed comedy-drama Transamerica. Her television debut occurred in the same year as well, in a season four episode of Law & Order.

Stella Maeve has been reportedly receiving acting lessons from Ann Ratray. Her fellow classmates include Katrina Bowden, Adam Scarimbolo, Yaya DaCosta, Addison Timlin, and Odeya Rush.
In 2005, Stella Maeve began her career in writer-director Jess Bond’s (credited as Jess Manafort) short film Liminality, portraying the role of Kat. She then worked with the likes of Felicity Huffman, Kevin Zegers, and Fionnula Flanagan in writer-director Duncan Tucker Transamerica. The film received multiple awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Drama for Huffman.
In 2005, Stella Maeve also began her long-standing professional relationship with Dick Wolf by guest-starring in the season-four episode, No Exit, of NBC’s police procedural television drama series Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She also appeared in another episode that season, playing a different character, and in a season 16 episode of Law & Order.
In 2006, she starred in the short film Euthanasia, and in the following year, portrayed the role of Lighty in the comedy-drama Remember the Daze. Between 2008 and 2009, she appeared in two episodes of The CW teen drama series Gossip Girl, playing the role of Emma Boardman, the niece of Dean Berube from Yale. Maeve worked with Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, and Ethan Hawke in the 2009 crime-drama Brooklyn's Finest.
In 2010, she portrayed the late singer-songwriter and musician Sandy West in the biographical drama The Runaways. In the same year, she starred in the telefilm My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 2, which was a sequel to the 2009 telefilm My Super Psycho Sweet 16. She portrayed Tracy Bernstein and her clone Tracy 2 in the 2012 sci-fi thriller Cloned: The Recreator Chronicles. In the critically acclaimed indie drama Starlet, Maeve delivered a powerful performance as an adult film actress and neurotic flatmate of the main character, Jane (Dree Hemingway).
In 2013, Stella Maeve was cast as Agnes Clark, the younger sister of the protagonist, Walter William Clark Jr. (Theo James), in the short-lived crime-drama series Golden Boy. Despite garnering mixed to positive reviews from the critics, it never became popular among the general public and was canceled by CBS after airing 13 episodes.
Maeve joined the cast of Chicago P.D. in the season one episode, Now Is Always Temporary, in 2014. Her character, Nadia Decotis, was initially a prostitute and drug addict but later becomes an employee of the police department. She was associated with the show until 2015 when she left to star in The Magicians.
Based on American novelist Lev Grossman’s The Magicians trilogy, the Syfy fantasy drama The Magicians (2015-2020) revolves around Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), who starts attending Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy to become a magician. Maeve portrays Julia Wicker, Coldwater’s childhood friend. She is denied entry into the university and subsequently joins a secret magical society.
Stella Maeve first appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2006 in a season seven episode titled Influence. She returned to the show in 2015 to portray her Chicago P.D. character, Nadia Decotis, in the season 16 episode, Daydream Believer. She reprised the same role in the season 17 episode, Nationwide Manhunt, in 2016.
Over the course of her career, Maeve has guest-starred in a number of TV shows, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2009), Bones (2010), House (2010-2011), Grey’s Anatomy (2012), Rizzoli & Isles (2014), Noches con Platanito (2017), and God Friended Me (2019). She is set to star in the upcoming crime-drama film Manson Girls, about the female devotees who joined Charles Manson's flock in the 1960s and helped carry out brutal killings meant to start an apocalyptic race war.
