After graduate specialized in bacteriology under V. K. Vysokovich. 1901-1902 sent abroad for further study, inter alia under Professor P. Ehrlich. 1903 returned to Russia to defend doctor’s thesis on the biochemical link between toxins and enzymes, in which he demonstrated that rennin, like toxins, has an antigenic property and precipitates the formation of antirennin.
Devised method of freeing horse’s serum from the substances inhibiting its neutralizing action on rennin. Also demonstrated the cxistancc of a modification of rennin analogous to toxoids. From 1908 director, Khar’kov Bacteriological Institute.
From 1910 extraordinary professor, Chair of Hygiene, Khar’kov University. During World War 1 helped to develop method of obtaining tetanus serum, which had previously been imported. 1923-1930 director, Mechnikov Institute, Moscow.
Proposed use of neutral mixture of diphtheria toxin and antitoxin, as well as a combined scarlet-fever vaccine consisting of dead hemolytic scarlatinal streptococci and scarlatinal toxin. 1924 introduced vaccine for intestinal infer lions made from dead formalin cultures. Wrote some 80 works.
