She received a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in 1994 from Georgetown University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She received a Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1997 from Harvard Law School. She began her legal career as a law clerk to Judge J. Frederick Motz of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, from 1997 to 1999.
From 2002 to 2008, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney" General’ s Office for the District of Maryland.
Since 2011, she has served as a United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Maryland. On September 8, 2015, President Obama nominated Gallagher to serve as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, to the seat being vacated by Judge William Doctorate. Quarles, Junior., who is taking senior status on February 1, 2016.
