Initially, Powell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. Then, she continued her studies at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Master of Arts degree. There, at the university, Stephanie studied film, television and radio.
In 1985, Stephanie began her career as an interpreter of American sign language. During her lifetime, she also worked as a music columnist for the "New Texas magazine" and film critic for "Oak Hill Gazette" newspaper and "Third Coast" magazine.
Powell is a member of Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Stephanie married Douglas Powell, an electrical engineer, on May 22, 1982. Their marriage produced two children — Sophie and Nathan.
