He was a solicitor"s clerk, qualifying as a solicitor in 1852. In 1864 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Newtown, where he served until his 1881 elevation to the Legislative Council. There he was appointed to the ministry to serve as Postmaster-General, but the following year he died in Sydney.
