Stephen Climpson was born in 1956. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales and the state's largest city, later became the setting of his legal career.
Climpson studied at the University of Sydney, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney was the first university established in Australia, and it became one of the principal centres of higher education in the colony's growing capital.
His admission to the New South Wales bar in 1980 marked his entry into legal practice in that state, following his university studies.
Climpson's professional career has been centred on Sydney, where he worked as a partner of Phillips Fox. Phillips Fox was an Australian law firm with a prominent insurance practice, and at the time of its integration into a global network it had offices in Australia, New Zealand and Vietnam.
In 2006 the firm became part of the DLA Piper group and operated as DLA Phillips Fox. In 2011 DLA Piper opened for business in Australia by absorbing the Phillips Fox practice, which ended the separate existence of the firm.
