McGill was born on February 18, 1958 in Aldershot, United Kingdom; the son of James Osmond McGill and Joyce Courteney (Phillips) McGill.

McGill was born on February 18, 1958 in Aldershot, United Kingdom; the son of James Osmond McGill and Joyce Courteney (Phillips) McGill.
McGill began his career as a broker at Sedgwick Forbes Bland Payne Group Ltd in 1977. Four years later he took the same position at Fenchurch Group Brokers Ltd. Then in 1982, Steve was appointed an assistant director at that company. Also he served as an executive director at Fenchurch Group Brokers Ltd from 1985 to 1986.
In 1986, McGill held a position of an executive director at Willis Faber & Dumas Ltd. In 1989, he became Director at Lloyd Thompson, Ltd. Eight years later Steve was a deputy chairman at the same company. In addition, he served as Director at JLT Specialty Limited from 1992 to 2003. In 1996, McGill became Director at Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group, PLC., where he worked until 2004. In 2002, he took the same position at JIB Group Limited. Steve worked as a director at Aon Group Ltd from 2007 to 2009.
In 2005, he was appointed Group President of Aon Plc, where he worked until 2017. The same years McGill was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Risk Solutions business segment which is comprised of Aon Risk Solutions. Since 2017 he has been Director at Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. Steve was also a founding trustee of Find A Better Way, a charity focused on improving the lives and communities affected by landmines. He also serves on the International Advisory Board of British American Business.
On May 26, 1990 Stephen McGill married Lana Yu-Hing Miu, with whom he divorced. They have two children. He then married Elizabeth Mawbey.
