Came with parents to Charlestown, Massachusetts, when 10 years of age. Graduated from Harvard Grammar School, 1868, Charlestown High School, 1872. Honorary Master of Arts, Dartmouth, 1888.

Doctor of Laws, Boston College, 1908.

Career

Reporter on Boston Globe, 1872-1874. Joined staff of Boston Journal, 1874, as reporter, later becoming, successively, city editor, news editor, general manager, and editor-in-chief and publisher. Sold Journal, October 1902, and retired.

Later police commissioner, City of Boston.
