(Excerpt from Eremus, Vol. 1 The heaven is silent, silent...)
Excerpt from Eremus, Vol. 1 The heaven is silent, silent is the earth! Our dreams and faiths we have outlived, and now No God looks in on us, nor any voice Speaks to us, as of old to few or Greek. As in some sore-encompassed city, we. Shut in the citadel, still cry to those Who watch upon the walls, pale sentinels Of Science, peering into Space, "What now?" And still the answer comes "No sign, no sound. But only millions upon millions Of stars!" The old, the ancient winds have dropped; A dead calm is upon us, yet at times The air in which we breathe, begins to stir, To heave, and shiver as before a storm, The storm of Truth; that storm I shall not live To see; I sing bid in the pause and hush, A solitary bird that in this dumb And ominous stillness trembles into song. Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

This small but significant change, a laurelwreath instead of a geometrical design testimony to Mr. John Lane ssensitive alertness in publishing denotes an interesting episode of literary history, the curtain of which I have been invited to lift. I could tell it all, and more, from memory, without opening a book. But first I must quote a statement from a distant issue of The A cademy, of which at that time I was editor. The date is January 15th, 1898 :the statement (it seemed momentous then :it has a thrill even after the lapse of nearly nineteen years) was this :I naccordance with our intention to crown two books of signal merit published in 1897, we have made the following awards: One Hundred Guineas to Mr. Stephen Phillips, for his volume of Poems. Fifty Guineas to Mr. Wi Uiam Ernest Henley, for his Essay on the Life, Genius, and Achievement of Bums, contained in the fourth volume of the Centenary Edition of the Poey of Robert Bums. That statement is the text of this chronicle essay which introduces a reprint of Christ in Hades, with under standing illustrarions by Miss Stella Langdale.
