This book takes you into the amazing and deadly world of the hazardous devices technician (civilian) and the explosive ordnance disposal technician (military). It is a world where a single mistake or error in judgement can immediately cost you your life. I spent more than a year visiting bomb squads around the country learning how they train, what equipment they use, and what emerging hazards they face. The result is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book ever written on bomb disposal. Flip through the book's pages and you will visit the FBI's elite "bomb school" in Alabama, where all bomb techs in America are trained. You will also learn how the US Navy uses dolphins and sea lions to find and retrieve enemy mines in the ocean. Additionally, you will be privvy to the "inside" stories of what really happened at the Oklahoma City, Centennial Park and World Trade Center bombings - from the bomb techs and forensic scientists who were there, on the scene at ground zero. The book also takes a blunt and realistic look at the threat posed by nuclear, biological and chemical terrorism. The conclusions drawn will make your hair stand on end. By the time you finally put the book down, you will better understad why these brave men and women walk towards a bomb when everyone else is running away...and you will respect them for it. Bomb Squads is illustrated with 100 b/w and color photographs, the majority of which have never before been published!

(Aircraft carriers are the mightiest class of U.S. Navy ve...)
Aircraft carriers are the mightiest class of U.S. Navy vessels. But most people don't realize that in addition to transporting an awesome air arsenal, each of these ocean-going cities prowls the high seas with an entourage of up to 15 additional vessels. In the event of hostilities, these "carrier battle groups" allow nothing to violate their personal space-areas often measured in hundreds of square miles. The individual roles of nuclear submarines, the cruisers that coordinate carrier-based air power, the aircraft themselves, anti-submarine vessels and, of course, the carriers are all discussed and depicted in exclusive action photography. In addition, author Steve Tomajczyk addresses criticisms of carriers as wasteful and outmoded; explains how a carrier battle group-the U.S. Navy's most powerful operating unit-defends itself from attacks; and compares the firepower wielded by a typical carrier battle group to that of potential adversaries.

Quotations:
“I started my writing career while still attending the University of Michigan. An English professor of mine, Barney Pace, encouraged me to pursue writing. On one of my papers (which I still have) he wrote: ‘I accuse you of possessing talent, and I dare you to do something with it.’ So I did. I left college with a contract for my first book, Eyes on the Gold."
“It was my grandfather who inspired me to write. He adored books and made certain that my bookshelves were always full. During one of our summer trips to New Hampshire, he took my brother and me to Diamond Lake up near the Canadian border. There, one evening, as we sat out on the cabin porch overlooking the lake, admiring the star-littered sky, he told me something that I have never forgotten: ‘Steve, whenever you do anything in life, always reach for the stars. If you only reach for the roof, you’ll never get off the ground.’ So when I dream, I dream big. When I aspire for things, I go for them with all that I have.
“There are many people who want to be professional writers. The only thing that separates them from me is that I actually sit down in front of the computer each day and do it. There is absolutely nothing glorious about writing. It’s a tedious and often painful struggle that leaves its tell-tale calluses on your fingertips. I know of several people who are more talented than I am with their writing skills, but since they have never committed themselves to ‘the chair,’ they are condemned to remain wanna-be authors for life.
“What I truly enjoy about writing is that it presents me with the opportunity to inspire hope, influence decisions, and encourage people to action. I wrote the Dictionary of the Modern United States Military because, having been raised as the son of a naval officer, I wanted to give the public a better understanding of what the military is really about. The focus traditionally has been on the technology of war (jets, tanks, weapons) rather than where it belongs: on the individuals. Wars are fought by people, not machines. So I endeavored to portray a slice-of-life of what today’s military establishment is like. I delved into social issues (homosexuality, spousal abuse, suicide, rape), diseases common to the battlefield, psychological impacts of combat, battlefield tactics, espionage, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, slang, agencies, installations, chemical and biological warfare, special operations, terrorism, and so on. The book took four years to research and write. I believe it is the most complete and up-to-date reference book of its kind in the world."
Tomajczyk is a member of Author’s Guild, American Medical Writers Association, as well as National Writers Union.
Tomajczyk married Joyce J. Welch on June 21, 1991.
