(In this magisterial examination of the Presidency over th...)
In this magisterial examination of the Presidency over the course of the 20th Century, the author explores the history of the world's greatest elective office and the role each incumbent has played in changing the scope of its powers. Using individual presidential portraits of each of the presidents of the past century Graubard asks, and answers, a wide variety of crucial questions about each President. What intellectual, social and political assets did they bring to the White House, and how quickly did they deplete or mortgage that capital? How well did they cope with crises, foreign and domestic? How much attention did they pay to their election pledges after they were elected? How did they use the media, old and new? Above all, how did they conduct themselves in office and what legacy did they leave to their successors? Graubard provides original analysis in each case, and reaches many surprising conclusions.

( AIDS will be with us for the rest of our lives. Living ...)
AIDS will be with us for the rest of our lives. Living with AIDS confronts this long-term challenge, through a series of powerful and thought-provoking essays that seek a more realistic public-health and public-policy environment for dealing with the AIDS epidemic. The essays are grouped in sections covering the sociological and historical background, cultural impacts, clinical perspectives, the public-policy agenda in the United States, and international perspectives. They also include a primer on epidemiology for readers who may not be familiar with the importance of that field in the study of AIDS.Beginning with the inescapable conclusion that there, will be no immediate cure for AIDS, although competent therapies are expected to convert AIDS into a treatable chronic malady, Living with AIDS takes up a whole array of problems created by the continuing spread of the virus. It also goes beyond dealing with AIDS as a health-care problem in essays that analyze social and political conditions, the different populations that are affected in different parts of the world, ethical and moral issues, public attitudes and individual fears, stigma, and suffering. In a tantalizing thought experiment that reinvents AIDS as a disease of young, privileged, female populations of industrialized nations, one contributor illustrates the intensely political nature, of AIDS that impedes its claim on national priorities and resources.Stephen Graubard is Editor of Dacdalas, Journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Brown University.

( The modern presidency really begins on September 14, 19...)
The modern presidency really begins on September 14, 1901, argues Stephen Graubard, with the assassination of William McKinley and the succession of Teddy Roosevelt. TR's vigorous presidency foretold the expansion of wartime authority under Wilson; the growth of federal government under FDR; and the national security issues that dominated much of the foreign policy concerns during the Cold War.In his provocative new account of the enormous shift of power to the office of the American presidency, Graubard draws upon his intimate knowledge of every president since FDR to reveal the dangerous transformation of the executive branch in the last hundred years. Graubard sees three different "presidencies" over the course of the century, marked by increasing accumulation of authority: the presidency created by TR, Wilson, and FDR, continued under Truman and Eisenhower, in which foreign policy issues played a far greater role in presidential politics; the period of America's time of troubles from Kennedy to Carter, in which the disastrous Vietnam War spurred a further tendency to secrecy; and the third presidency, defined by Reagan and marked by spin. Learning the lessons of Reagan and Clinton, George W. Bush has inherited a far more powerful office than the one originally envisioned by the Founding Fathers. With access to former members of both Republican and Democratic administrations, Graubard has written a masterful history of presidential power--one that anyone concerned with American politics will need to read.

(Showa - the six-decade period of Emperor Horihito's reign...)
Showa - the six-decade period of Emperor Horihito's reign, which began in 1926 and ended with his death in 1989 - accounts for fully half of Japan's modern history. It was a turbulent time of aggressive and catastrophic war, defeat and foreign occupation, domestic transformation and spectacular growth. The end of Showa provided and occasion for the Japanese to confront their past and the roots of their present success. The morally charged debate over the meaning of Showa is carried on in this volume by distinguished experts on Japan. In light of the history of Showa, they analyse the strengths of the Japanese economy, democracy and Japan's political culture, achievements in technology and the arts and relations with other Asian nations and with the United States.
