Gregory, Stephen Strong was born on November 16, 1849 in Unadilla, New York, United States. Son of J. C. and Charlotte C. Gregory.

Education

Removed to Madison, Wisconsin, 1858. Bachelor of Arts, University of Wisconsin, 1870, Bachelor of Laws, 1871.

Career

Practiced law at Madison, 1871-1874, then in Chicago. Partner of Judge A. H. Chetlain, 1874-1879. Then of Tenney & Flower, which later was succeeded by Flower, Remy & Gregory.

Member Gregory, Booth & Harlan, 1888-1893. Practiced alone and later the firm Gregory & McNab, Chicago, was formed. Was special counsel for city of Chicago before the Supreme Court of the United States in the Lake Front case.

With John P. Wilson defended and successfully maintained the constitutionality of the law creating the Sanitary District of Chicago. Defended the murder case of Prendergast and the conspiracy case against Eugene V. Debs. Was short time special counsel for Federal Trade Commission.

Member Cook Company Fuel Committee and war committee of Chicago Bar Association, since 1917.
