He specializes in econometrics and industrial organization. He is most famous for Berry–Levinsohn–Pakes (BLP) and other approaches to demand estimation. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in 1980 and an Master of Surgery and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1985 and 1989.
In April 2014, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
