Steven received Bachelor of Arts at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1964. Then he earned Master of Arts at New York University in 1966, and Doctor of Philosophy there in 1973.
Steven was a radio journalist in the United States of America, and has worked at the University of Heidelberg as a lecturer for American studies for many years. He also worked as part-time teacher at New York University, Fordham University, and University of Maryland’s European Division. Since 1977 he is a lecturer on American topics in Germany.
In 1962, Steven married Dolores Nobles, but their marriage ended. In 1968 he married a singer Sara Gothelf. He has two children, Zoe Bornhoeft-Bloom, David.
