Wheelwright has a bachelor"s degree in mathematics from the University of Utah and an Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Philosophy from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Prior to that appointment, he was a professor and senior associate dean at Harvard Business School. On May 12, 2015, it was announced that effective July 27, 2015, Wheelwright would be succeeded by John South. Tanner as the president of Brigham Young University-Hawaii. They are the parents of five children, including Marianne West. Lewis, the dean of the Cass Business School in London.
