Steven Coates worked for the New York Times and other publications. He was published in periodicals such as Booklist, New Criterion, New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, Science, Times Literary Supplement, Tribune Books, Washington Post Book World, Whole Earth and others.
Coates joined with Kurt Johnson to produce his first book “Nabokov's Blues: The Scientific Odyssey of a Literary Genius” in 1999. In Nabokov's Blues, Coates and Johnson, the latter a lepidopterist and expert in butterfly taxonomy, trace "Nabokov's career as a lepidopterist and as a writer, and the value of his contribution to entomology as a butterfly taxonomist".
