DeBrota received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Political Science from Butler University in 1986. Three years later he earned his Juris Doctor degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law.
Debrota began his career as an associate in litigation section at Frost Brown Todd LLC in 1989. Two years later he took a position of an assistant at the United States Attorney's Office and had held it for twenty one years. Since 2007 Steven has been an adjunct professor at Indiana University Bloomington. Also since 2013 he has served as a senior litigation counsel at the United States Attorney's Office. Since 2017 Debrota has been working as a chief deputy of general crimes unit at the same office.
In addition, he is the project safe childhood coordinator, chairperson of the Indiana Environmental Crimes Task Force and computer hacking and intellectual property coordinator.
