He spent the majority of his career as Professor of Sociology and Director of the Science Studies program at the University of California, San Diego. Impure Science discusses how Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome patients in the 1980s were able to transform their status from being a disease constituency to being experts in experience. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome activism was seen by many as being the template for patient and health groups activities.
He is widely published, and has written three books, Learning By Heart: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and Schoolchildren in America"s Communities, with David L. Kirp, Marlene Strong Franks, Jonathan Simon, Doug Conaway, and John Lewis (1989), Impure Science: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge (1996), and Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research (2007). Impure Science has been reviewed by the New York Times, The Washington Post, and others
