Feierman was born on December 12, 1940 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Alexander and Jeanette (Sobel) Feierman.
Feierman received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1961. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree from Northwestern University. In 1970, Steven was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university. Also in 1972, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University.
Feierman began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin in 1969. Three years later he took a position of an associate professor at the same university. Steven served as a professor at the University of Wisconsin from 1977 to 1989. In 1989, he became a professor of history and anthropology at the University of Florida, where he worked until 1995.
Feierman has spent many years living and working in East Africa. He teaches African history, comparative medicine and medicine and development at the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences, where he is a professor of history, emeritus.
Steven Feierman is known for his books, including "Peasant Intellectuals: Anthropology and History in Tanzania", "The Shambaa Kingdom: A History", "The Social Basis of Health and Healing in Africa" and others.
Feierman has been the dissertation advisor to a great many distinguished African historians, including Thomas Spear, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Randall Packard, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of African History, Emory University and many others.
