2004 Thayn challenged District 11 incumbent Republican Senator Brad Little in the May 25, 2004 primary, coming in second in the three-way race.
2012 Redistricted to District 8, and since incumbent Republican Senator Sheryl Nuxoll was redistricted to District 7, Thayn is seeking the district"s open senate seat. He won the three-way May 15, 2012, Republican primary with 3,312 votes (446%), facing Democratic nominee Joanna Claussen and Kirsten Richardson in the November 6, 2012 general election. 2006 Thayn defeated incumbent Republican Representative Kathy Skippen in the May 23, 2006 primary, winning with 2,759 votes (523%). He won the November 7, 2006, general election with 9,294 votes (7544%) against Constitution Party nominee Kirsten Richardson. 2008 In the close three-way May 27, 2008, Republican primary, Thayn won with 2,074 votes (383%). He won the November 4, 2008, general election with 11,538 votes (599%) against Democratic nominee Bob Solomon. 2010 Thayn won the May 25, 2010, Republican primary with 3,464 votes (651%) against Mike Pillin. He was unopposed in the November 2, 2010, general election, winning with 11,687 votes.
