The new 2nd edition includes 100 brand new cases covering the diagnosis and management of interesting and challenging problems in general internal medicine. Each patient's case is followed by the physical examination and initial diagnostic impression which prompts the reader to derive his/her own preliminary diagnosis and plan for treatment . Laboratory findings are then given along with a detailed discussion of how the patient was diagnosed and the follow-up results. At the end of each case, valuable clinical pearls (major points) are provided.

This text contains 100 real-life cases of patients. Each patient's complaint is described, followed by physical diagnosis and laboratory findings, after which a diagnosis is arrived at, followed by a discussion on the basis for such diagnosis. Sharp chest x-rays accompany these cases. By studying the complaint, the x-ray, the physical diagnosis and laboratory findings, the reader can make his/her own diagnosis before turning the page and finding out what the experts conclude.

185 case summaries are presented randomly to challenge the reader. The first page of each case features a brief clinical summary, usually accompanied by an illustration. The reader is encouraged to formulate a differential diagnosis, diagnostic approach, and therapeutic plan. On the following page(s), the diagnosis is presented and discussed, with emphasis on unifying basic principles, interesting aspects of the patient's course, treatment, and outcome. Finally, information important to the correct management of the case―"clinical pearls"―is highlighted at the end. A few key references also are supplied for each case.
