(Comparative Economic Systems: Culture, Wealth, and Power ...)
Comparative Economic Systems: Culture, Wealth, and Power in the 21st Century explains how culture, in various guises, modifies the standard rules of economic engagement, creating systems that differ markedly from those predicted by the theory of general market competition. This analysis is grounded in established principles, but also assumes that individual utility seeking may be culturally determined, that political goals may take precedence over public well-being, and that business misconduct may be socially detrimental. The book clarifies conceptual misunderstandings about the comparative merit of free competition and perfect governance, showing in many cases how the same results are attainable using either mechanism, or by combining them. It illuminates why engineering variables such as the quantity and quality of fixed and variable inputs, management, entrepreneurship, technological progress, and economic governance do not adequately explain disorders like the increasing poverty of the world's poorest nations. End-of-chapter questions and an extensive glossary enhance the book's utility and enable readers to fully comprehend the key features of each chapter.

(This book demonstrates that Russia intends to re-emerge a...)
This book demonstrates that Russia intends to re-emerge as a full-fledged superpower before 2010--challenging America and China and potentially threatening a new arms race. Contrary to conventional wisdom, this goal would appear to be easily within the Kremlin's grasp, but the cost to the Russian people and global security would be immense. Hence, Steven Rosefielde proposes a sophisticated strategy to dissuade President Vladimir Putin from pursuing the destabilizing course. His analysis conflicts with the post-cold-war image of the Soviet Union as a westernizing, mass consumption society committed to "peaceful coexistence."

( Most Western assessments of the Soviet Military threat...)
Most Western assessments of the Soviet Military threat depend critically on the accuracy of the CIA’s direct cost estimates of Soviet arms expenditures. These estimates not only measure the cost of Soviet defense programs, they also provide essential information on the real rate of Soviet procurement growth. The Central Intelligence Agency’s estimates in this way serve as a summary indicator of the aggregate annual improvement in the quantity and quality of Soviet weaponry. In this explosive, expanded assessment of the CIA’s military costing techniques, Steven Rosefielde shows that the CIA continues to dangerously underestimate the Soviet arms buildup. Rosefielde breaks out the CIA’s direct costing methods into its component procedures and assumptions, and then applies econometric methods to test their empirical and logical validity. In doing so, he demonstrates how a fundamental methodological error has led to decades of falsely estimating the Soviet Union’s military investment patterns. He argues forcefully that the CIA’s optimistic conclusion that the Soviet threat has been checked is greatly exaggerated.
