Stewart R. Craggs was born on July 27, 1943, in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
Craggs received his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Strathclyde, in 1978 and 1982 respectively.
Craggs began to work at the University of Sunderland as the technical services librarian from 1973 to 1981, later becoming a reader services librarian from 1981 to 1992, a development services librarian from 1992 to 1995, as well as to a professor of music bibliography in 1993.
Craggs served as a Justice of the peace from 1974. He has been working as a freelance researcher and bibliographer since 1995.
As a writer, Craggs has been publishing a great number of books, including William Walton: A Thematic Catalogue (1977), William Alwyn: A Catalogue (1985), Arthur Bliss: A Bio-Bibliography (1988), Richard Rodney Bennett: A Bio-Bibliography (1989), John Ireland: A Catalogue, Discography, and Bibliography (1993) and Edward Elgar: A Source Book (1995).
