Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(Excerpt from Aural Culture Based Upon Musical Appreciatio...)
Excerpt from Aural Culture Based Upon Musical Appreciation, Vol. 1 of 3 Since the appearance in 1910 of "Music and its Appreciation" and "The Appreciative Aspect of Music-study," I have been repeatedly asked to write something in the nature of a class-book, or teacher's guide, for those desirous of systematically training their pupils in the aural perception of music. Certain ideas had begun to shape themselves in my mind in this direction when I discovered with pleasure that my friend and former pupil, Mr. Ernest Read, A. R. A. M., was planning a series of lessons in which the basic facts of music, such as Pitch, Time, Rhythm and Character, were revealed to the pupil through the medium of definite musical compositions. This design - so far as I know, original in its conception - seemed so eminently in consonance with the whole idea of Musical Appreciation Study, that I at once proposed to Mr. Read that we should collaborate on the present work. As a consequence, those portions of each volume dealing more directly with the question of Ear-training and Sight-singing represent in large measure the result of his experience in teaching classes both of children and also of those who can no longer be described as belonging to that category. The special Rhythmic Exercises and Nursery Rhyme tunes, which I feel will form a very attractive feature of the elementary lessons, are the composition of my colleague. As stated in the Introductory Chapter, Parts II and III deal with more advanced aspects of the matters contained in Part I, and develop the idea of Musical Appreciation in its wider sense, in a form which it is hoped may be useful to the teacher who may be concerned either with classes or with individual pupils. Although actually independent of the scheme of work herein set forth by my colleague and myself, the interesting and attractive Free Rhythmic Movements for young children described by Miss Marie Salt in the Appendix entitled "Music and the Young Child," are, in my opinion - based upon close personal observation for some time past - of the utmost value in preparing the way for a more formulated musical training of ear and mind. It is obvious that such movements could with advantage precede or accompany the scheme of study laid down in Part I of this book. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(In preparing them for issue in their present form, I have...)
In preparing them for issue in their present form, I have thought it wise to preserve the informal style which best fitted the conditions under which they were originally presented. I quite realize that if the intention in the first place had been to set forth in book form the thoughts herein contained, they would often have been expressed somewhat differently. Feeling, however, that to alter their manner would tend in all probability to destroy whatever directness they might possess, I have ventured to leave them virtually as they first appeared, merely adding a few fresh points which seemed to drive home more completely the arguments advanced. It will doubtless be noticed that some overlapping of idea occurs from time to time in the course of these essays, and that a topic developed in one is referred to, possibly at some length, in another. This has been inevitable owing to the fact that it has more than once been necessary to approach the same subject from different sides, and in relation to circumstances which in their nature vary considerably. I can only hope that any apparent verbal redundancy may be compensated for by additional clearness, and by the emphasis thus laid upon certain matters of fundamental importance. London, 1915. PREFACE TO REVISED EDITION. MANY of the ideas and suggestions contained in the following pages have, since their first appearance, been put into practice in various parts of the country. In the present edition I have considered it advisable, however, to leave the text (save in a few trifling instances) unaltered. This decision was come to with a full realization of all that has of late been accomplished by distinguished writers and teachers in the cause of musical education, but at the same time with the knowledge that much remains still to be done. It is with this thought in mind that both author and publishers have felt th (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

(Excerpt from Aural Culture Based Upon Musical Appreciatio...)
Excerpt from Aural Culture Based Upon Musical Appreciation, Vol. 2 of 3 IN the preceding Part of the present work the aim of the authors from the very first was to develop the latent musical instinct of the pupil, and at the same time to enable him to acquire a sound know ledge of the elementary basic facts of music, such as Time, Rhythm, Pitch and Character. AS soon as any one of these important matters had been realized and absorbed by the ear as a real musical experience, but not before, the means by which it was made clear to the eye in writing - in other words, its notation - was introduced to his notice.
