This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Lent on the one great Christian act of worship, the only service founded by our Lord Himself: the service which in all essentials is the same now in the twentieth century as it was in the first, the same here in England as it is all over Christendom. And I propose to take, in order to guide us in our study, five of the names by which this service has been widely known. To-night I take The Sacrifice of our Redemption. This title you will find, at any rate, as far back as the fourth century. I take it from the Confessions of St. A ugustine, a charming as well as a valuable book, one of the great books of the world, which I specially ask you to get and make your own this Lent, if indeed you have not already done so. In the last chapter but one, speaking of his mother Monica sburial, he says :W ewent and returned without a tear. Not even at those prayers which we poured forth unto Thee, when the body rests beside the tomb, before it is committed to the ground, and the Sacrifice of our Redemption is offered for the departed, as is the custom there not even at those prayers did I weep. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
