Strauss Zelnick is an American business executive, lawyer, and private-equity investor. He founded Zelnick Media Capital and became chairman and chief executive officer of Take-Two Interactive, while previously leading companies in filmed entertainment, recorded music, and interactive software.
Background
Strauss Zelnick was born on June 26, 1957, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He developed his career in the American media and entertainment industries, moving among filmed entertainment, recorded music, television, interactive software, and private equity.
Zelnick has lived and worked primarily in the United States and has maintained a long professional connection with New York's media, investment, and corporate communities. He married Wendy J. Belzberg in 1990, and they have three children.
Education
Zelnick received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Founded in 1831, Wesleyan is a liberal-arts university known for combining undergraduate teaching with broad study in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
He later received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, both in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1983. Harvard Law School, founded in 1817, is one of the oldest law schools in the United States, while Harvard Business School, established in 1908, became a major center for graduate management education and case-based business study.
Zelnick began his entertainment-industry career at Columbia Pictures, where he served as vice president for international television from 1985 to 1986. He then joined Vestron Inc., serving in senior corporate-development and executive roles before becoming president and chief operating officer in 1988. Vestron was an entertainment company active in home video, film, and television distribution during the expansion of the video-rental and home-entertainment markets.
From 1989 to 1993, Zelnick was president and chief operating officer of Twentieth Century Fox, managing the company's worldwide motion-picture and distribution business. Fox was one of the major American film studios, and the position placed Zelnick in the international theatrical and home-entertainment businesses. He subsequently served as president and chief executive officer of Crystal Dynamics, an interactive-entertainment software producer and distributor.
Zelnick joined BMG Entertainment in the 1990s, first leading its North American business and later serving as president and chief executive officer of the global company from 1998 to 2000. BMG operated record labels and music-publishing businesses in many countries, and Zelnick's tenure connected his executive work with the growing transition from physical music distribution toward digital media.
In 2001, Zelnick founded ZelnickMedia, now known as ZMC, a private-equity firm investing in and operating businesses in media, entertainment, communications, and technology. ZMC later entered into a management relationship with Take-Two Interactive, an interactive-entertainment publisher whose major businesses include Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga.
Zelnick became chairman of Take-Two in 2007, executive chairman in 2008, and chief executive officer in 2011. He continues to serve as chairman and CEO, overseeing a company that develops, publishes, and markets interactive entertainment for global audiences. He has also served on the board of Starwood Property Trust and held senior governance roles at CBS Corporation, including non-executive interim chairman from 2018 to 2019.
Founded Zelnick Media Capital in 2001, establishing a private-equity firm focused on media, entertainment, communications, and technology businesses.
Led Take-Two Interactive as chairman and chief executive officer during its development as a global developer, publisher, and marketer of interactive entertainment.
Built an executive career spanning Columbia Pictures, Vestron, Twentieth Century Fox, Crystal Dynamics, BMG Entertainment, private equity, and interactive software.
