Career
During his career, Gauld played for Salvesen Boys Club, Hearts, Derry City Football Club, Saint Patrick"s Athletic, Glenavon Football Club, Finn Harps Football Club, then to his final stretch at Derry City Football Club, before completing his career at Omagh Town Football Club. In a 1988/89 League of Ireland Cup quarter final game at Athlone Town Gauld replaced the injured Tim Dalton in a penalty shoot out and saved Stephen Yeates’ penalty before scoring the winning penalty. He made his League of Ireland debut at Monaghan for Derry on 1 December 1985. His first goal came on the 15th of December 1987 at Finn Park.
His 100th competitive appearance came in a 1-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers on the 2nd of April 1989.
Gauld represented the League of Ireland at Inter-League level Gauld once appeared in the Guinness Book of Records for having the longest successful run of penalties taken in football.
