Commissioned ensign, United States Navy, 1920, and advanced through grades to vice admiral, 1955. Commander United States Seventh Fleet, also United States Taiwan Defense Command, 1955-1957. President United States Naval War College, 1957-1960, retired 1960 and recalled active duty Office Secretary Defense, 1960.
