Su-Mei Tse was born on January 29, 1973, in Luxembourg, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to a violinist father and a pianist mother.
Su-Mei Tse first studied classical cello at the Luxembourg Conservatory and pursued her musical education at the Conservatoire de Musique (Music Conservatory) in Paris.
Then, she turned to the visual arts studies and entered the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art (National School of Applied Arts and Crafts). She graduated in 1996 with a diploma in Textile & Printing. It was followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree in plastic arts from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) four years later.
Su-Mei Tse started her career at the end of the 1990s. Trained as a cellist before becoming an artist, she has featured music or something related to it in one way or another from the very beginning of her artistic path. So were her early performative works, 1999 ‘La Marionette’ and 2001 ‘Das wohltemperierte Klavier’ where cello and piano played a pivotal role in the act.
The first serious acclaim came to Tse two years after when she represented her video projection ‘Les balayeurs du désert’ (The Desert Sweepers) and a tripartite installation ‘Air Conditioned’ at the Venice Biennal. In 2005, she was invited to have a solo show at the Renaissance Society where she presented five video works.
Since then, Tse has exhibited nationally and internationally, including the shows and performances in France, Italy, Spain, United States, Switzerland, China, and Taiwan.
Nowadays, Su-Mei Tse shares her time between Luxembourg and Berlin. The representative of her art in New York City is Peter Blum Gallery.
With special attention to visual and auditory elements, Su-Mei Tse explores such notions as time, memory, musicality, language, and the fusion of two cultures through her works. A daughter of a cellist and a pianist, she discovers the world that surrounds her and the world of her own experiences using the universal language of music.
Tse’s cosmopolitan origins influenced many of her works as well. Some of them express her relationships with Asia, the others show her attitude toward Western culture and traditions.
