Kumar earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Lucknow in 1965, followed by a Master of Science degree in 1967. He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Lucknow in 1971.
Kumar began his career as Senior Science Assistant at the Central Drug Research Institute in Lucknow, India, where he worked from 1971 to 1974. After relocating to the United States, he served as Visiting Research Associate at Ohio State University in Columbus from 1974 to 1977.
In 1977, he joined the University of Oklahoma in Norman as a Research Associate, a position he held until 1983. That year, he became Associate Director of the Research Division of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He also served as Principal Investigator for the Research Foundation of the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Since 1983, Kumar's research has been supported by cancer research grants from the National Institutes of Health.
He was recognized as a noteworthy organic chemist by Marquis Who's Who. Professional inclusion in Marquis Who's Who has historically been used to document individuals with established careers and contributions in their respective fields.
Kumar was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for Cancer Research, Sigma Xi, and Phi Lambda Upsilon.
